Ever wonder why some people keep on drawing and painting but never improve? They seem stuck just where they are.
Well, me and my good friend had this conversation not long ago *in fact it was only a few days back*. We were talking about this one particular artist we knew who's done a lot but improvement.
Seriously, this person has posted one new artwork almost every day, but none of them are showing any progress.
Well, maybe just A SLIGHT improvement from last year.
It's pretty pathetic, especially for someone who's claiming to do a lot of commissions.
Anyway, that doesn't only happen to that particular person, but also to a lot of artists in general.
So, what makes an artist improve heaps and leaps, and what makes one don't?
I was having this question too for the longest time in my life. I was wondering, why some of my friends improved quickly and significantly while I didn't. It took me quite sometimes to finally see some nice progress.
I used to think that maybe I was at the slower side of the team. But boy, I was wrong!
It's true though, that everybody has their own pace to level up, but I learned that we are able to speed up the process through dedication and perseverance.
I'm on my 100 heads right now, and still 900 to go (for those of you who read my story on how I've started practicing on 1000 head drawings, you'll know what I'm talking about). Still long way to reach that 1000 goal, but I saw HUGE leap of improvement going on!
Between the first couple of heads to the latest ones, a huge huge difference! I posted them on my art blog and my sketchbook in imaginefx forum.
And the amazing thing is, it took me 1 month only to be able to draw like that now. I also practice on gesture studies, and now I can clearly see that my character or figure drawing is getting a lot looser, a lot more fluid, and a lot more movement!
I'm not trying to talk big about myself, but just want to show people that with dedication and perseverance, anything is possible!
What's your weakness point? Is it drawing the head? Hands? Feet? Environment? Value and color? Or anything else?
Those things can be overcome by doing practice EVERYDAY. Draw like there's no tomorrow. Carry sketchbook wherever you go. Sketch anything FROM LIFE whenever you're bored. Spare sometimes to practice. And don't forget to set your goal.
What do you want to accomplish within this practice? How many do you need to do in order for you to improve? Write it down in your memo, table, whatever.
Or better, write how many more to go for each studies.
Important thing to remember, know what to improve in each practice. That means don't just blindly draw. Just don't!
It's bad, and it will lead you nowhere. Artist who's blindly drawing without any direction what to do next, will only find themselves going around in a circle. And they'll get frustrated.
After they get frustrated, some of them will quit art, some will stay but only to be mediocre artists.
I bet no one wants to be mediocre, right?
I certainly don't want to :).
Blindly draw doesn't literally mean you close your eyes when you draw, but take cautions on things.
For example, when I started my 1000 heads, I didn't know which area I should focus on first. So I rendered my drawing and tried to show the head and facial structures using shading instead of line.
It's not bad, but it's kinda messy.
Then Mike *my beloved mentor* said, "Don't do shading. You can turn bad drawing into something great with shading, but if it's only line, bad drawing is basically bad."
That was when I had my first revelation on what to do: show structures using line. What he said completely makes sense. If your line drawing and line quality is great, you don't need shading to make your piece to look good.
Well, a well-thought and well-put shading will make the artwork better, but it only works if we have a well-drawn line drawing for the base.
So putting that into consideration, I tried to observe the model more carefully and think about each stroke I put down on my paper. Basically not just scribble and erase.
Now I understand what Bobby Chiu said in Reverie Workshop a year ago, "Do not rush to put down strokes. One thought, one stroke."
The same goes for painting, traditionally or digitally.
If people tell you to work on that darn plane-changes on the lips area, go practice!! Observe the model, spend your time getting the right study, instead of just blindly painting another portrait with the exact same mistake over and over again!
Please don't be so ignorant, people.
And don't give people reasons like, "This is my style." "Well, I like it that way."
Ok, you like it that way and you can suck your thumb in the corner and cry when you see your friends are getting a top-notch job and you're just doing another small commission.
Another important thing: DRAW FROM LIFE!!!
It's simple, but VERY crucial for us. Especially for you, artists who are struggling with drawing environment, people, still life, anything, put down your darn wacom tablet and your oh-so-pretty character design drawing, pick up your pencil or pen and start drawing whatever is in front of you!
Laptop, mattress, your room, your table with things on top, your neighbor's cars, cats, dogs, trees, your crush, teacher, friends, anything FROM LIFE.
People tend to miss this live-sketching part as crucial part of improvement. I admit, it's not fun sometimes to draw those things, but it helps tons for recognizing shapes, practicing line quality, speeding up drawing process, and for building up our visual library.
Wonder why some artists seem so effortless when drawing buildings? I bet that's because they do TONS of live-sketching of buildings around their place.
There's no short cut for art, people.
It ain't rocket science, you need to work hard for it.
A lot of people jump into design process *armor, costume, weapon whatever you name it*, before nailing down their basics.
It's just the same as building your house in a weak foundation. It's not bad, but it will look shaky.
Even if you have a great costume design for your character, but when you can't make the anatomy or the value works, your drawing or painting fails.
Master the basic first, then you can go crazy with design, composition, illustration, color, whatever!
Oh, another thing that ticks me off when talking with fellow artists, a lot of them claim to do studies from...MANGA. or Anime. -_-a
WHATTTT!!!!
Please don't do that. Do your studies from the real thing, whether it's a photo or observing directly or any other method, I don't care, but FROM REAL THING!
First of all, manga is one of a stylized versions of realism.
Second, not all manga artists know what they're doing.
Third, do you think Inoue Takehiko can pull amazing drawing out of his butt without doing any live studies? HECK NO! I bet that person understands the human anatomy well.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against manga at all, in fact I love them! I just can't stand people who are so ignorant, only looking at manga or anime, and neglect the rest.
Having manga or anime references is good, especially manga with great quality of drawing.
But it's also good to look other styles too, just to broaden your horizon and learn from them :).

How to Train your...
Hooray! After spending time until 4.30 am this morning and had to go to class 3 hours later, I can say that I'm fairly happy with the outcome of this blog :D
And I decided to keep this blog for fun stuffs I encounter everyday *or every week*.
Speaking about blog, after a long time on indecisiveness, I finally set up a nice art blog.
I wasn't really confident with my skill, but right now I guess I'm getting better. Thanks to God for the strength He's been giving me to overcome obstacles, and everyone who's been supporting! :D

Anyway, I've been in love with animation world ever since I watched Dreamworks' newest movie "How to Train Your Dragon". That movie is SUPERB to the core! Poorly underrated at first, but Dreamworks managed to whoop us with awe.
The characters, storytelling, concept designs, everything is just...sweet.
Really sweet it made me watched it twice, two days in a row. And I'll totally go for the third round!
Can never get enough with Hiccup, Toothless and the vikings. They're just adorably enchanting.
For me, this is the first animation to grow so deep in me after Lion King.
For anybody who hasn't watched this movie, GO WATCH IT NOW! I demand your soul to go and buy the tickets to the nearest theater, preferably in 3D (because it just looks so much better).
It also has the bluray DVD coming out and an awesome artbook out already. A must buy! :D

GODDDD!!! Looks soooooo GOOD!!!! TT_____TT *drooling* Definitely added to my "must-buy" list!! You can read the review at his blog: Parka Blogs.
Oh dear, how am I going to save money when I have so many artbooks I wanna buy?
But at least I managed to get Claire Wendling's and Stephen Silver's artbook when I was at Wondercon a few weeks ago :D
I also got 2 prints from Bobby Chiu and Kei Acedera (Imaginism Studio), plus a speed painting mini artbook by compilation of French artists. Spent quite a lot of money, but overall I'm really happy since those books are investment :).
I'll post them up later with a brief description of each stuff.
Oh, not forgetting 2 free posters from The Art Department aka TAD. And when I was in their booth, I saw one copy of Jon Foster's out of print artbook. I WANTED TO STEAL IT SOO BAD!! >____<" *bad Mutia!* Btw, for those of you who's never heard of Jon Foster, he's a superb illustrator who's done so many book covers. His works are just..breath-takingly beautiful. Here's the artbook that I wanted, and couple of his images.

Speaking about Wondercon, it was my first time coming into one, and I'll definitely go again next year! :D They had panels in Wondercon, and one of speakers was actually Adam Hughes!!! *O_o*. Unfortunately though, he didn't come T_T. I don't know what was going on but yeah..quite a disappointment.
Adam Hughes does a lot of Marvel and DC Comic stuffs, and he's one of my most fave artists right now :). I've been studying his line quality on his pencil works and painting.
Too bad I didn't bring my camera, or else I could've taken a lot of pictures -_-a. My camera right now kinda sucks. I really do think I need a new camera *sigh, MORE MONEY!!! >_<* Oh well, I really need to work now I guess? Alrity folks, that's all for now. I have to take a rest before actually going delusional because of lack of sleep and too much caffeine *weeeee!!!! XD* Cya in the next post and God is IN you! :D

GOD IS MY VICTORY!!
It's 2010 alreadyyy!!!!
This blog is practically near the brink of death for almost a year, blame to my laziness to update *haha*
It's been a lot going on for the past couple months *obviously, duh!*, but I just want to share something really simple right now.
Well, I'm in my last year of college and soon will enter the "professional" world. HUAHH!!! no longer a student!! Can you believe that?? Finally I'll be able to kick the "student" title from my shoulder MUAHAHAHA!
Honestly, I'm not ready for it. Really really not ready. The thought of real deadlines and paying bills and everything scares me away *ok mutia, how old are you???*
Sooo speaking about it, in order for me to be ready for the next journey, God has helped me a lot.

Aduh sumpe susah bener bo ngetik pke bahasa inggris!!! -_-a

It all started last semester when I took Anthony's class and on the very last day of class, he looked at my portfolio and said, "Honey, you'd better get crankin' right now, if not, you're not gonna make it into the industry."
....
Yes I knew from the very beginning that my level at that time didn't really cut for it. Still, hearing it directly from the professional *art director per se* punched me. Hard.
And it kinda made me realize, it was really useless to be prideful.
Yeah, I was that prideful of my work, and sometimes *a lot of times actually* looked down on people whom I thot wasn't standing in the same level. But guess what? God slapped me and crushed that ego of mine to pieces.
I knew I had to improve a lot, but had no clue where to start.
Then 1 day, I visited my best friend's classroom and talked to her teacher who used to be my teacher back in freshman year. For some reason, the conversation was going into improving skill and such, and suddenly Mike *her teacher* said to me, "Well, if you're willing to work hard, I'll help you out."
WHATTTT!!!
Seriously, it's like an answered prayer to me! God sent someone, who's been working in the industry *Lucasfilm, hello??* to be my personal mentor!
Mike said he was going to kick my butt, and he really does!!!! He even said the same thing Anthony said to me when he checked on my sketchbook. -_-a
So I guessed I really have to work hard, eh?
He assigned me 2500 drawings and 100 paintings to complete. Crazy, huh?
Those 2500 drawings consisted of 1000 heads, 500 legs, 500 arms, 250 feet and 250 hands. The 100 paintings consisted of 25 still lives, 25 portraits, 25 nude figures and 25 landscapes.
I also added 500 gestures to the "boot camp menu" to practice, plus started doing live sketching minimal 2 drawings per day.
Also, God gave me the chance to enroll into Honors Portfolio class. Some of my friends said they don't really like it and they feel like they're not improving, but it's different case for me.
The way I see that class is not just to make portfolios and get good grades. For me personally, that class is a training ground on how to surrender fully to the Lord.
Why?
Because I'm fully aware, if I don't rely on Him, I'm going to be soooo stressed out. We have the best students here, and honestly speaking, I don't deserve to enroll! I wasn't recommended to take this class when my midpoint review came out.
It's only by God's grace that Chuck *my director* reviewed couple of my stuffs for the second time and then let me take this class.
God knows my desire, and He lights up the path for me to see :).
I don't know what's more in store, but all I can believe is there's going to be something much much greater!
Remember that all believers are made for far greater things than ourselves can even imagine!
It's really amazing when I looked back on my journey with God. I've been far apart from Him for quite a long time, but He remains faithful to me.
"Be still and know that I am God." - Psalm 46:10

24!!
Sebenernya sih gue udah ngetik banyak entry buat blog ini, cuma kadang inspirasinya suka melayang entah kemana, mengakibatkan gue jatoh ke dalam mood malas dan akhirnya malah nggak dilanjut sama sekali.
Nah, yang kali ini sini gue mau share tentang surprise manis nan menyakitkan yang dikasih Tuhan and temen2 pas bday yang ke24 tanggal 12 Juli kmaren ini.
Yeah bebeh, GA NYANGKA UDAH 24!!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
Can't believe how fast time goes, rasa2nya baru kemaren deh gue turn 18, eh tau2 sekarang udah jadi 24! Setaon lagi and I'll be living a quarter century hahaha :p
Eniwei, sebenernya nih ya, gue udah tau kalo malem tgl 11 bakalan disurprisin. Makanya gue secepat kilat beberes kamar biar keliatan "rapi" walopun nggak 100% rapi, tapi yah okelahhh... Abis sebelomnya bener2 kayak kandang ayam, baju dimana2, jalan aja susah saking lantainya udah ketutup sama majalah2 yang bertebaran hahahaha...
Kan malu kalo misalnya anak2 pada dateng kasih surprise tau2 menemukan gue tinggal di tempat yang agak tak layak disebut sebagai tempat peristirahatan manusia.
Eh, pas tinggal dikit lagi beberes, si Dita telpon, suruh gue turun ke bawah. Lah gue bingung donk, ni anak2 ga salah apa dateng jem 11 lebih. Kalo mau diserpraisin pasti datengnya mepet2 or even lebih dari jem 12. Tapi gue udah ada feeling, jangan2 ntar gue dibawa kemanaaa gitu.
Nah, bener aja tuh. Ternyata ide gue buat ngerjain Adri waktu dia bday dipake ke gue sendiri *dan Adri akhirnya ga jadi diserpraisin gara2 si Mike dengan bodohnya nampang di depan apartmentnya si Adri pas Adri ga sengaja keluar dari parkiran apartmentnya gara2 mau beli minum. Mbok ya tulung langsung sembunyi gitu loh Mikeeee, jangan malah nampang! huahuahauhua.*
Dan ngomong2 ide gue, waktu Adri bday tuh si Adam sempet nanya, "Enaknya si Adri diapain ya?"
Ya udah karena gue kreatif, jadilah gue bilank ke dia, "Gimana kalo kita blindfold Adri, trus kita culik dia, bawa ke twin peak or mana gitu, trus disurprisin di sana."
Nah, ternyata ide "blindfold-culik-bawa ke suatu tempat" itu kena ke gue sendiri. Dan jujur aja nihhhh, walopun gue ga ngomong2, tapi gue secretly wish ke Tuhan kalo gue pengen digituin *wakakaka, hasrat terpendam*.
Makanya begitu skenario ini dikerjakan, hepilah gue huahuahauhua :p
Dan gue udah nebak2 sih, pasti dibawanya ke tempat yang berbau2 "laut" karena emank gue lebih demen laut dibanding gunung :D.
Dan ternyata benar! Gue dibawa ke Ferry Building deket Bay Bridge situ. Langitnya lagi cerah, pemandangannya bagus, lampu2 dimana2, pokoknya cantek dahhh :D Sayang bulannya ga full moon hehehe..
Tapi gpp, masih indah kok :D :D
Eniweiii, seindah2nya malam yang bertabur bintang, ternyata gue kedapetan tragedi juga. Pertama kalinya gue jatoh ngejengkang ke belakang!!!!
Jadi tuh ya ceritanya, gue tau2 didudukkan di 1 tempat antah dimana, dan ditinggal begitu saja. Dengan keadaan diblindfold, gue bener2 berasa kayak sapi ompong yang buta dan ditinggal di tempat pejagalan. Trusss, maunya nih pura2 ngambek, biar pada ga enak dikit gitu maksudnya.
Eh, ternyata, saking gue terlalu bersemangat berakting ngambek, gue sama sekali nggak sadar kalo ternyata tempat duduknya itu nggak ada sandarannya sama sekali!
Alhasil, terjungkallah diriku ke belakang dengan suksesnya. Dunia serasa berputar, teman2!!
Sedetik, dua detik yang terdengar cuma hening... Nggak lama kemudian baru anak2 ngerumunin n pada tanya, "Mutttt!!! Are you OK??" sambil ngakak2 ga karuan.
Haizzzz!!! Saat itu perasaan gue bener2 campur aduk, antara bingung, ngeblank dan geli.
Bingung karena bener2 nggak terduga bisa turn out kayak gitu.
Ngeblank...ya karena saking bingungnya jadi ngeblank.
Kalo geli, yah udah sewajarnya karena emank menggelikan!
Yah pokoknya benar2 tak terlupakanlah pengalaman waktu bday kali ini :D
Tengkiu buat semua yang telah berupaya supaya malam itu menjadi malam yang bener2 memorable. You guys rock!!!! :D :D :D *group hugs*

Eniwei, sebenernya nih ya, gue udah tau kalo malem tgl 11 bakalan disurprisin. Makanya gue secepat kilat beberes kamar biar keliatan "rapi" walopun nggak 100% rapi, tapi yah okelahhh... Abis sebelomnya bener2 kayak kandang ayam, baju dimana2, jalan aja susah saking lantainya udah ketutup sama majalah2 yang bertebaran hahahaha...
Kan malu kalo misalnya anak2 pada dateng kasih surprise tau2 menemukan gue tinggal di tempat yang agak tak layak disebut sebagai tempat peristirahatan manusia.
Eh, pas tinggal dikit lagi beberes, si Dita telpon, suruh gue turun ke bawah. Lah gue bingung donk, ni anak2 ga salah apa dateng jem 11 lebih. Kalo mau diserpraisin pasti datengnya mepet2 or even lebih dari jem 12. Tapi gue udah ada feeling, jangan2 ntar gue dibawa kemanaaa gitu.
Nah, bener aja tuh. Ternyata ide gue buat ngerjain Adri waktu dia bday dipake ke gue sendiri *dan Adri akhirnya ga jadi diserpraisin gara2 si Mike dengan bodohnya nampang di depan apartmentnya si Adri pas Adri ga sengaja keluar dari parkiran apartmentnya gara2 mau beli minum. Mbok ya tulung langsung sembunyi gitu loh Mikeeee, jangan malah nampang! huahuahauhua.*
Dan ngomong2 ide gue, waktu Adri bday tuh si Adam sempet nanya, "Enaknya si Adri diapain ya?"
Ya udah karena gue kreatif, jadilah gue bilank ke dia, "Gimana kalo kita blindfold Adri, trus kita culik dia, bawa ke twin peak or mana gitu, trus disurprisin di sana."
Nah, ternyata ide "blindfold-culik-bawa ke suatu tempat" itu kena ke gue sendiri. Dan jujur aja nihhhh, walopun gue ga ngomong2, tapi gue secretly wish ke Tuhan kalo gue pengen digituin *wakakaka, hasrat terpendam*.
Makanya begitu skenario ini dikerjakan, hepilah gue huahuahauhua :p
Dan gue udah nebak2 sih, pasti dibawanya ke tempat yang berbau2 "laut" karena emank gue lebih demen laut dibanding gunung :D.
Dan ternyata benar! Gue dibawa ke Ferry Building deket Bay Bridge situ. Langitnya lagi cerah, pemandangannya bagus, lampu2 dimana2, pokoknya cantek dahhh :D Sayang bulannya ga full moon hehehe..
Tapi gpp, masih indah kok :D :D
Eniweiii, seindah2nya malam yang bertabur bintang, ternyata gue kedapetan tragedi juga. Pertama kalinya gue jatoh ngejengkang ke belakang!!!!
Jadi tuh ya ceritanya, gue tau2 didudukkan di 1 tempat antah dimana, dan ditinggal begitu saja. Dengan keadaan diblindfold, gue bener2 berasa kayak sapi ompong yang buta dan ditinggal di tempat pejagalan. Trusss, maunya nih pura2 ngambek, biar pada ga enak dikit gitu maksudnya.
Eh, ternyata, saking gue terlalu bersemangat berakting ngambek, gue sama sekali nggak sadar kalo ternyata tempat duduknya itu nggak ada sandarannya sama sekali!
Alhasil, terjungkallah diriku ke belakang dengan suksesnya. Dunia serasa berputar, teman2!!
Sedetik, dua detik yang terdengar cuma hening... Nggak lama kemudian baru anak2 ngerumunin n pada tanya, "Mutttt!!! Are you OK??" sambil ngakak2 ga karuan.
Haizzzz!!! Saat itu perasaan gue bener2 campur aduk, antara bingung, ngeblank dan geli.
Bingung karena bener2 nggak terduga bisa turn out kayak gitu.
Ngeblank...ya karena saking bingungnya jadi ngeblank.
Kalo geli, yah udah sewajarnya karena emank menggelikan!
Yah pokoknya benar2 tak terlupakanlah pengalaman waktu bday kali ini :D

Cerita Seputar Jakarta
Dan mutia melaporkan...
Setelah absen 2 bulan, bahkan lebih dalam hal blogging-memblogging, akhirnya gue balik lagi buat menuangkan tumpukan celotehan yang udah menggunung dalam hati.
Cerita kali ini panjang lho..semoga yang baca pada tahan ya :D
Pertama, sebenernya sebelom gue pulank Indo bulan desember kmaren, gue bertekad untuk mengupdate blog gue ini dengan perjalanan gue selama 1 1/2 bulan di Jakarta dan sekitarnya. Ternyata sodara2, rencana tetaplah jadi rencana karena gagal total semuanya huahuahua.
Yang ada, gue malah terlalu sibuk berhaha-hihi sama temen2, soping and bereksis2 ria, wisata kuliner, baca mangascannya eyeshield sampe 2 hari berturut2 gue tidur jem 8 pagi, dan hunting komik sampe ada kali gue beli skitar 100 biji.
Speaking of komik, akhirnya gue ngumpulin eyeshield 21 dari nomer 1 sampe 22 lengkapppp!!! thanks to my lil kucrit, si icha yang iseng2 beli eyeshield nomer 1 dan akhirnya membuat gue super ketagihan!!! hauhauhua :D

Indonesia tanah air beta ini memang sangat menyenangkan. Nggak cuma gue kurusan di sono (ya iyalah, gimana ga kurusan kalo tiap jem 7 pagi dibangunin nyokap, diseret buat kelas yoga or rpm?? belom lagi temen gue yang ngajakin fitness molo kalo lagi nganggur, dan karena status gue adalah seorang pengacara, alhasil hampir tiap hari gue nongkrong di gym sambil ngecengin cowok2 cakep hauhauhau :p), dapet banyak baju (gaudi dan mangga dua emank tempat perhentian fave), dan kembali ke lifestyle ala nona2 ("mamiiii besok tulung masakin bakmoy yaaa..." "mbakkk kamarnya jangan lupa diberesin." "ayo pak gun, anter saya ke GI ya.").
hoek..oke deh, yang terakhir agak2 lebay alias berlebihan hauhaua...
Ngomong2 lifestyle, beneran lho, cuma di indo gue bisa pake red lipstick ke mall tanpa dipandang aneh sama orang2. Tapi ya musti liat2 mallnya lah ya..kalo ke puri doank pake lipstik merah mah ntar disangka mo lenongan kali ye? huahuahau...

Kunjungan ke Dallas: The Outcome
Seperti yang udah gue janjiin di entry sebelomnya, kali ini gue bakalan membahas tuntas apa2 aja yang gue dapet selama gue mengikuti workshop Reverie di Dallas kemaren.

REVERIE Day 1: The Opening Party
Since ini malem pertama workshop ini dibuka, so kita mostly cuma hang out, kenalan sana-sini, dance till the dawn came *gue ga tau sih kapan kelarnya, since jem 1 gue udah cabut*, sama ngeliatin para instructor berdemo ria di 10 (or 12) projector screen yang tersebar di seantero ruangan. Sebenernya kita bisa punya pilihan untuk start sketching and drawing sih, secara ada banyak model2 yang berpose selama party berlangsung, dari yang berbaju sampe yang nude. Tapi meh, being me, too lazy to draw at that moment (ya iyalah, wong balik SF aja gue bisa ke workshop buat gambar, ngapain gue wasted time di sana gambar2 lagi?), alhasil gue cuma ngider2 ngeliatin demo2 yang ada. Setelah beberapa kali nemplok di beberapa tempat demo yang berbeda2, akhirnya gue stuck di tempatnya Jason Chan *where else should I be? :p*
Dan ngomong2 Jason Chan, kali ini gue bener2 ngerasa jiwa fangirl gue keluar! XD
Beneran deh, level fangirlnya beda gitu waktu ketemu sama Andrew Jones n Marko! (secara yang satu cuma gara2 gantengnya, yang satunya terpaksa jadi fangirl sementara gara2 autograph laknat!)
But man...It was Jason Chan man! Illustrator fave gue yang sukses membuat gue pindah haluan dari yang cuma bisa gambar komik Jepang sampe jadi punya style sendiri yang based on realism drawing! Gue masih inget tuh, udah bertaon2 gue desperate pengen keluar dari manga or anime style tapi tetep balik2nya ke situ2 lagi.
Dari mulai nyoba ngikutin stylenya si Kidchan yang super duper graphical (dan akhirnya gue give up sendiri karena sense of designnya ga ada sama sekali), ngotot pengen ngalahin 1 ilustrator indo bernama B***c**** yang bikin gue jeles setengah mati (dan sekarang if i think about it and look back, WHAT ON EARTH HAD GOTTEN INTO ME?????), sampe desperately trying ganti style gambar kesana dan kesini sampe capek sendiri.
Dan on 1 fateful nite *ciehhhhh...uhuk2*, gue secara nggak sengaja menemukan 1 gambar dia. Gue langsung fell in love sama style drawingnya sodara2!! Drawing/painting stylenya tuh bisa passssssssssss bener sama apa yang gue cari selama ini: a mix between realism and anime style. Hasilnya? uh oh, so beautifullll *d (TTwTT) b /thumbs up!*
Eniwei, sejak saat itu, gue langsung ngeset goal untuk ngejer levelnya si bang Jason, dan mulai melangkah supaya gue bisa sampe di sono, walopun it means gue musti back to basic, belajar lagi dari awal ttg anatomi, proportion, gesture, facial feature yang realis.
Dan sejak ada bang Jason, gue dengan santainya bisa berkata, "Sapa? B***c****?? Udah lupa tuhhhh!!!" WAKAKAKAKAKA XD
Okeh, cukup dengan nostalgilanya, sebelom gue malah ngalor-ngidul kesana-sini dan lupa sama point2 yang mau gue sampaikan.
Berhubung emank gue DEMEN BANGET sama si bang Jason (sampe pernah mimpiin dia segala tau gaaaaaa!!!! Malu2in udah gedongan juga, bisa2nya mimpiin orang yang tau mukanyapun nggak!!! PARAH! *plak!*), gue nggak mikir2 lagi waktu tau dia ngedemo di salah satu projector yang ada. Sampe temen2 gue geleng2 melihat jiwa fangirl sejati gue yang udah mulai keluar.
Kira2 gini kronologis kejadiannya:
gue: Hey guys! Found anything interesting around?
Nils and Sophie: Yea, where have u been? We saw Marko demoing not a long ago there.
gue: Oh really? What about Jason Chan?
Nils: Oh, he's actually right there in the corner, he's just started demoing.
gue: ..... *kaget!!!*
REALLY??? WHEREEEE????? *mata membesar saking senengnya*
Nils: There, go! *nunjuk ke salah satu corner dengan kerumunan orang*
Tanpa ba-bi-bu, gue langsung melesat ke TKP dengan kecepatan cahaya yang bisa ngebikin Hiruma Youichi dari Eyeshield 21 terkekeh2. Nyampe di TKP, ternyata tempatnya crowded banget sodara! Saking banyaknya orang yang berdiri mo liat demonya si Jason. Untungggg gue pendek, jadinya gue bisa nyelip2 sampe akhirnya maju di barisan paling depan, pas di belakangnya si bang Jason.
Omg, gue deg2an bangetttttttttttt!!! WAKAKAKAAKKAKAKA!
Rasanya kayak ketemu sama gebetan yang lamaaaa banget ga ketemu!!! DODOL ABIS!!! XD
Gue saking hepi plus perasaan laen2, cuma bisa speechless sambil senyum2 ngeliat dia ngedigipaint. Seriously kayak anak ABG huahuahuahuahua :p Nah, lagi asik2 ngeliatin si Jason ngedemo, tau2 temen gue, si Cecely dateng:
Cec: Ah, I should have known you're here
gue: yea, where else???
Cec: Are you not going to talk to him at all?
gue: ...I want to, but I have no clue what should I say!
Cec: oh come on girl, just say sumthing, like introduce urself!
gue: and then what?
Cec: and then..start talking!!!!
gue: ...No, I think I'll go blank if I ever do that
Cec: ...Ok, I will make you talk to him after this guy finished talking!
BAH!
Udah mempermalukan diri di depan Andrew Jones, masa mau mempermalukan diri di depan Jason Chan juga sih????? Kalo sampe gue berbuat bodoh di depan Jason Chan, bener2 bisa mati burung ituuuu!
Akhirnya, sebelom si Cecely melancarkan serangan gerilyanya ke si Jason supaya gue bisa ngobrol sama dia, gue memutuskan untuk bertindak. MERDEKA ATAU MATIIII!!!!! XD
Tapi sebelom gue sempet bertindak, tau2 ada 1 orang cowok yang ngedatengin Jason and mulai ambil posisi mau ngobrol.
Cec: Hey Phil! This girl REAALLLYY wants to talk to Jason. Could u wait after her?
The other guy: Oh, sure! He's all yours!
OMG.
I.really.felt.like.a.fantard.
A.super.one... *sweatdropbangingheadagain*
And all of those conversation happened while we were standing BEHIND him DIRECTLY!!!! You know..Our voice wasn't THAT soft. Infact, it was quite loud since we had to speak louder so the other party can hear. Imagine kalo Jason Chan sempet denger anything yang kita omongin, I'd flush myself down the drain to erase any embarrassement.

Finally I got the chance to talk to him directly and ask for any of his advice on digital painting. Here's what I got:
- work on grascale
- use overlay layer on top to set up the mood
- alternate layer mode, depends on what u wanna do
- normal layer on top for richer color
- using hard round brush, varies opacity, flow and hardness for most of the painting
- airbrush for blending only
- pastel brush for texture
- jangan lupa imagenya diflip untuk ngecek :)
Next, hari kedua!
Daripada ntar kepanjangan ngebahas bang Jason, bisa hatchi2 dia digosipin molo hahaha.
Di hari kedua ini, gue ga banyak ngapa2in, karena perut gue sangatlah sakit. Padahal awalnya gue cuma nahan kentut doank lho, ehhh malah buntut2nya jadi maag trus kembung trus malah kram perut kayak ditusuk2! :|
Makanya sodara2, kalo hendak kentut janganlah ditahan2, bisa berakibat fatal ntar!
Workshop yang sempet gue ikutin: Anatomy and traditional drawing by Andrew Jones sama Michael Mentler. Bah, ini si bang Jonsie sibuk sendiri sama kerjaan dia, apanya yang ngajar bung?? Si Mentler very helpful sih, tapi gara2 suara dia kecil buanget dan orang2 yang ngerubutin dia banyakkkk alhasil gue juga tak tahu-menahu dia lagi ngajar apa. ^^;
Di hari kedua ini, yang cukup helpful malah waktu gue ngeliatin sketchbooknya si akang Wes dan cara dia gambar. Kacauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!
Tu orang bener2 my new inspiration deh!!!! Again, gara2 ngeliat gambar2 dia, gue kayak dibukain tentang cara shading dan toning yang bener pake pensil mekanik!
Dia nggak pake tools macem2 lhooo...Cuma modal pensil cetekan 2B sama sketchbooknya yang ukuran mini, tapi dia bisa produce such a BEAUTIFUL pencil drawing in short amount of time! TTATT *terima kasih oh Tuhan buat pencerahannya!!!!*
Satu hal yang gue belajar dari si akang Wes tercintah: dia nggak buru2 kalo narik garis. It seemed to me that he put a lot of thought in each stroke. Jadinya nggak asal ngurek2, ga asal sketching. Lining dia bersihhh banget, and gue jarang ngeliat dia ngehapus. Waktu dia ngesketch, dia juga ga ngesketch dengan napsunya, yang goresannya sampe berbekas di kertasnya gitu. Gerakan tangannya waktu ngegambar tuh sangat2 ringan, almost dancing di atas kertasnya. Flowy banget gitu deh.
Waktu dia ngeshade n ngetone juga sama aja, nggak asal ngeblok sana-sini yang penting keliatan ada shading. Dia bener2 took his time untuk develop hatching/cross hatchingnya, sampe akhirnya kerjaan dia keliatan 3D dan berkesan clean. Buat masalah ini, Jason Chan juga ada ngomong sama gue, untuk look for plane changes instead of blindly ngetone. Dan dia juga bilank, waktu gue put down my shading, goresannya diusahakan searah sama plane changesnya, biar kesannya 3D and nggak confusing.
Sejak dikasih tau gitu, gue mulai mempraktekan, dan hasilnya DASYAT BO!

Nah, this was the best day.
Kondisi badan gue oke, udah gitu dapet one on one coaching pula sama beberapa instructor!
Salah satu kelas yang menurut gue sangat bermanfaat, and thank God gue mengabaikan saran temen gue untuk ga ikutan kelas ini, kelas digital painting in photosop with Bobby Chiu. Walopun gue telat masuk sekitar 15 mins, and udah penuh bener sampe harus berdiri di pintu, tapi nonetheless, ini kelas bener2 inspirational n helpful!
Ini yang gue dapet dari kelasnya Bobby Chiu *nyadur dari notenya temen gue sih XD*:
- Pay close attention to position and the shape of highlight. When unsure, create a highlight on a new layer and move it around. The shape of the highlight reflects the shape of the surface at all times.
- Even when creating a fictional subject, it is important to draw inspiration from life. AKA: REFERENCE, BABY!!!
- Learn something every month and build up the library in your mind.
- You should always be trying to figure out your client’s vision rather than trying to push creative boundaries of your own. While on the job, you need to be enhancing the client’s vision rather than changing it.
Bobby’s quick digital demo:
• Make sure you can always see the thumbnail of your image. You can use navigator for this. Bobby opens a second window of the same file he is working on instead.
To do this, go to Window – Arrange – New Window for *whatever your file name is*.
Put the new window next to the window you are working in, and resize it so that you can see the thumbnail of the entire image. When painting, make sure it looks good in the thumbnail window or your picture may not be working properly.
• Do not rush to put down strokes. One thought, one stroke. The speed of putting down marks has nothing to do with your work speed. What makes you work faster is if you train yourself to think faster.
• Bobby likes to start in a dark background, sketch using a very slightly darker color. He believes that to preserve the imagination in one’s sketch, one must not kill it with too much contrast too early on. It’s very much like looking into the dark at night and seeing shapes. If it’s broad daylight with everything in plain sight, sometimes your imagination stops working.
• It is important to establish the lighting scheme early on. Work in layers, and if the contrast becomes too great too fast, turn down the opacity so you can easily paint over it on a new layer.
• Bobby starts out with the texture brush, then switch to the default round brush.
• Avoid using complete black. Try to think about colors a few steps ahead. On the other hand, highlights are also very rarely white.
• Bobby alternatively paints in the dark and the light, gradually increasing the contrast.
• Use contrast wisely. It’s a tool to attract the eye.

Selaen digital, gue juga dapet banyak tips2 dari para master oil painting, salah satunya adalah Greg Manchess. Cara beliau ngajar jelas beda sama Bobby Chiu yang lecturenya enak ngalir dan orang nggak bingung. Mr. Manchess suka ngobrol kesana-kemari and kita musti pinter2 nangkep point dari apa yang dia omongin. Eniwei, here's some tips yang gue dapet dari Mr. Manchess ttg how to do a drawing from imagination, doesn't matter what your medium is :)
Drawing from Imagination by Greg Manchess:
- Start with a vision, rough ideas. Jot down any ideas that you can come up with, then mulai dari thumbnails >> shape, jangan line/detail. As the drawing/painting progress, try to constantly thinking in shapes. Keep the idea as direct as possible
- Do research and planning of a painting, it's VERY important! If you plan ahead how your painting would be instead of just going with the flow, you will save more time and energy. You will also have a clear understanding on where you drawing would go.
- Set up tone and cahaya dari arah mana, supaya create lighting yang believable
- REFERENCES! always, and always have reference with you, especially if it's something with environment. Oh well, dont forget references. PERIOD.
- Give just enough taste of imagination. Maksudnya, jangan overdo, biar ntar jadinya tetep masuk akal. Give a taste of real life too in your drawing.
- Build up warna dari underpainting, then working towards shadow, and last baru ke light areas. Avoid going into detail first thing at all cost.
- Do your coloring by blocking the color, tapi jangan ngasal, harus ada formnya. Perhatiin tarikan brush, mo ke arah mana harus sesuai sama form/shape yang mau dibentuk (plane changes ala jason chan).
- Composition trick: Overlapping elements selalu menarik and give depth. Do not put the drawings/characters/elements at the same distant. It screams BORING!!
- Always, and always start with something simple first, then you can elaborate later on.
And here's another note I got from one on one talking with William Whitaker, a master painter :) Mostly sih tipsnya dia buat oil painting, tapi sapa tau aja bisa diapply ke digital juga XD
- When you have a difficulty on setting up a flesh color, go with a cooler tone instead of warm. You can never overdo your cool colors, but you can always overkill your warm colors. Cool colors also give you more freedom to build up to warm. Once it's too warm, you can never muted it down without making it looking muddy.
- Pick a brush that's the biggest brush we think we can use, then use the bigger one to paint
- Harus ada balance antara complexity/rendering area sama unrendered area. People tend to over-render everything so they leave no room for eyes to breath
- Dont worry about color combination and such. First, you need to master your brush handling and how you put down your color.

- Pay attention to size - composition relationship
- Dont forget that your BG color can be used to tell the story. What feeling do you want to convey? How can it be achieved?
- Give enough little detail to support your drawing. *again guys, dont kill yourself by overdoing your piece! :)*
- Pay respect to your character.

Eniwei, here's tips and tricks on how Nox did his digital painting in photoshop (Yeap, most of them were using sotosop. Seinget gue cuma si mister Jonsie yang pake painter):
- start with grayscale (a tight one, jangan asal diurek2)
- overlay layer to give the overall feeling
- color layer (gives nice tryout for color. it adds color without nutupin underpaintingnya)
- normal mode layer to finish up

The Art of Freelancing:
- Be spesific, you'd better have a trademark. Bisa dari medium, dari style, dari apa aja, yang penting punya trademark supaya orang bisa inget
- Fokus maunya kemana. Ke bookskah? Ke concept artkah? Jangan maruk semua2nya mau.
- Be picky on what you're working. Jangan asal duid, semuanya jadi.
- Be approachable. Have website, gaul n kenalan sama orang2 industry sana. Jangan malu2 memperkenalkan diri and always have a business card anywhere you go. If you can bring your portfolio sample, that would be great.
Bahasa indonya: jangan di rumah molo! Expose yourself, kalo memungkinkan go to conventions, and let people know you are exist!
Kerjaan nggak turun dari langit, bung!
- Get an award. Bobby Chiu pernah mention ini ke gue waktu kita ngobrol. Waktu itu gue tanya gimana caranya dia bisa jadi kayak sekarang ini, dan dia bilank, salah satu yang nolong tuh gara2 dia masuk ke Spectrum or Expose (lupa gue, salah satu deh pokoknya). Nah, dari situ dia langsung dapet recognition. Emank nggak mutlak jalannya musti gitu, tapi nggak bisa dipungkirin juga kalo orang2 jadi lebih bisa kenal kita kalo kita dapet penghargaan kayak gitu.
- JANGAN MALES!!!! *ajleb!!*
- Make a good portfolio, mulai dari isi sampe craftmanshipnya. Kalo perlu, minta tolong temen yang jago ngedesign buat design'in portfolio book kita. Go to professional people buat ngebound our book, jangan asal motong sendiri gara2 mau ngirit, ntar mencong2 akibatnya kerjaan melayang duid ilank juga.
Trus, karena portfolio kita harus terlihat sebagus dan secantik mungkin, alangkah baiknya kalo kita cuma present our best work. Wait to make a portfolio until we have at least 10 solid images.
- Know your client-to-be. Kalo elo ngedatengin client yang nyari book cover artist, perlihatkanlah gambar2 ttg book cover, jangan malah komik bikinan sendiri yang kita kasih liat. Gitu juga kalo your client to-be is looking for a concept artist, show her/him decent amount of visual development works, jangan malah buku cerita anak2 dibawa2.
Selaen itu, gue personally juga dapet masukan dari Jason Chan waktu dia ngereview sketchbook gue. Gini kira2nya:
- Use lighter pencil, karena dia ngeliat tendency gue ngebikin gambar jadi gelap and jadi messy gara2 graphitenya cemong2, dan juga tendency gue buat press super hard sampe akhirnya berbekas. Not pretty...
- Think about plane changes instead of lines. Perhatiin arsiran, harus searah/mendukung plane changes *ampe bosen gue dengernya*
- If work from life, draw what you see, not what you think you see.
Ihh, this one is a tricky one, soalnya rata2 orang punya tendency buat ngegambar apa yang ada di otaknya, bukan yang diliat mata. I literally have to stop and stare at the model when I draw from life, dan gue juga harus terus2an make sure tangan gue nggak going berserk sendiri, tapi bisa gambar pelan2.
- For pencil drawing, work from light to dark. You can always darken the light area, but once it's too dark, it's hard to pull the light area like before.

REVERIE Day 1: The Opening Party
Since ini malem pertama workshop ini dibuka, so kita mostly cuma hang out, kenalan sana-sini, dance till the dawn came *gue ga tau sih kapan kelarnya, since jem 1 gue udah cabut*, sama ngeliatin para instructor berdemo ria di 10 (or 12) projector screen yang tersebar di seantero ruangan. Sebenernya kita bisa punya pilihan untuk start sketching and drawing sih, secara ada banyak model2 yang berpose selama party berlangsung, dari yang berbaju sampe yang nude. Tapi meh, being me, too lazy to draw at that moment (ya iyalah, wong balik SF aja gue bisa ke workshop buat gambar, ngapain gue wasted time di sana gambar2 lagi?), alhasil gue cuma ngider2 ngeliatin demo2 yang ada. Setelah beberapa kali nemplok di beberapa tempat demo yang berbeda2, akhirnya gue stuck di tempatnya Jason Chan *where else should I be? :p*
Dan ngomong2 Jason Chan, kali ini gue bener2 ngerasa jiwa fangirl gue keluar! XD
Beneran deh, level fangirlnya beda gitu waktu ketemu sama Andrew Jones n Marko! (secara yang satu cuma gara2 gantengnya, yang satunya terpaksa jadi fangirl sementara gara2 autograph laknat!)
But man...It was Jason Chan man! Illustrator fave gue yang sukses membuat gue pindah haluan dari yang cuma bisa gambar komik Jepang sampe jadi punya style sendiri yang based on realism drawing! Gue masih inget tuh, udah bertaon2 gue desperate pengen keluar dari manga or anime style tapi tetep balik2nya ke situ2 lagi.
Dari mulai nyoba ngikutin stylenya si Kidchan yang super duper graphical (dan akhirnya gue give up sendiri karena sense of designnya ga ada sama sekali), ngotot pengen ngalahin 1 ilustrator indo bernama B***c**** yang bikin gue jeles setengah mati (dan sekarang if i think about it and look back, WHAT ON EARTH HAD GOTTEN INTO ME?????), sampe desperately trying ganti style gambar kesana dan kesini sampe capek sendiri.
Dan on 1 fateful nite *ciehhhhh...uhuk2*, gue secara nggak sengaja menemukan 1 gambar dia. Gue langsung fell in love sama style drawingnya sodara2!! Drawing/painting stylenya tuh bisa passssssssssss bener sama apa yang gue cari selama ini: a mix between realism and anime style. Hasilnya? uh oh, so beautifullll *d (TTwTT) b /thumbs up!*
Eniwei, sejak saat itu, gue langsung ngeset goal untuk ngejer levelnya si bang Jason, dan mulai melangkah supaya gue bisa sampe di sono, walopun it means gue musti back to basic, belajar lagi dari awal ttg anatomi, proportion, gesture, facial feature yang realis.
Dan sejak ada bang Jason, gue dengan santainya bisa berkata, "Sapa? B***c****?? Udah lupa tuhhhh!!!" WAKAKAKAKAKA XD
Okeh, cukup dengan nostalgilanya, sebelom gue malah ngalor-ngidul kesana-sini dan lupa sama point2 yang mau gue sampaikan.
Berhubung emank gue DEMEN BANGET sama si bang Jason (sampe pernah mimpiin dia segala tau gaaaaaa!!!! Malu2in udah gedongan juga, bisa2nya mimpiin orang yang tau mukanyapun nggak!!! PARAH! *plak!*), gue nggak mikir2 lagi waktu tau dia ngedemo di salah satu projector yang ada. Sampe temen2 gue geleng2 melihat jiwa fangirl sejati gue yang udah mulai keluar.
Kira2 gini kronologis kejadiannya:
gue: Hey guys! Found anything interesting around?
Nils and Sophie: Yea, where have u been? We saw Marko demoing not a long ago there.
gue: Oh really? What about Jason Chan?
Nils: Oh, he's actually right there in the corner, he's just started demoing.
gue: ..... *kaget!!!*
REALLY??? WHEREEEE????? *mata membesar saking senengnya*
Nils: There, go! *nunjuk ke salah satu corner dengan kerumunan orang*
Tanpa ba-bi-bu, gue langsung melesat ke TKP dengan kecepatan cahaya yang bisa ngebikin Hiruma Youichi dari Eyeshield 21 terkekeh2. Nyampe di TKP, ternyata tempatnya crowded banget sodara! Saking banyaknya orang yang berdiri mo liat demonya si Jason. Untungggg gue pendek, jadinya gue bisa nyelip2 sampe akhirnya maju di barisan paling depan, pas di belakangnya si bang Jason.
Omg, gue deg2an bangetttttttttttt!!! WAKAKAKAAKKAKAKA!
Rasanya kayak ketemu sama gebetan yang lamaaaa banget ga ketemu!!! DODOL ABIS!!! XD
Gue saking hepi plus perasaan laen2, cuma bisa speechless sambil senyum2 ngeliat dia ngedigipaint. Seriously kayak anak ABG huahuahuahuahua :p Nah, lagi asik2 ngeliatin si Jason ngedemo, tau2 temen gue, si Cecely dateng:
Cec: Ah, I should have known you're here
gue: yea, where else???
Cec: Are you not going to talk to him at all?
gue: ...I want to, but I have no clue what should I say!
Cec: oh come on girl, just say sumthing, like introduce urself!
gue: and then what?
Cec: and then..start talking!!!!
gue: ...No, I think I'll go blank if I ever do that
Cec: ...Ok, I will make you talk to him after this guy finished talking!
BAH!
Udah mempermalukan diri di depan Andrew Jones, masa mau mempermalukan diri di depan Jason Chan juga sih????? Kalo sampe gue berbuat bodoh di depan Jason Chan, bener2 bisa mati burung ituuuu!
Akhirnya, sebelom si Cecely melancarkan serangan gerilyanya ke si Jason supaya gue bisa ngobrol sama dia, gue memutuskan untuk bertindak. MERDEKA ATAU MATIIII!!!!! XD
Tapi sebelom gue sempet bertindak, tau2 ada 1 orang cowok yang ngedatengin Jason and mulai ambil posisi mau ngobrol.
Cec: Hey Phil! This girl REAALLLYY wants to talk to Jason. Could u wait after her?
The other guy: Oh, sure! He's all yours!
OMG.
I.really.felt.like.a.fantard.
A.super.one... *sweatdropbangingheadagain*
And all of those conversation happened while we were standing BEHIND him DIRECTLY!!!! You know..Our voice wasn't THAT soft. Infact, it was quite loud since we had to speak louder so the other party can hear. Imagine kalo Jason Chan sempet denger anything yang kita omongin, I'd flush myself down the drain to erase any embarrassement.

Finally I got the chance to talk to him directly and ask for any of his advice on digital painting. Here's what I got:
- work on grascale
- use overlay layer on top to set up the mood
- alternate layer mode, depends on what u wanna do
- normal layer on top for richer color
- using hard round brush, varies opacity, flow and hardness for most of the painting
- airbrush for blending only
- pastel brush for texture
- jangan lupa imagenya diflip untuk ngecek :)
Next, hari kedua!
Daripada ntar kepanjangan ngebahas bang Jason, bisa hatchi2 dia digosipin molo hahaha.
Di hari kedua ini, gue ga banyak ngapa2in, karena perut gue sangatlah sakit. Padahal awalnya gue cuma nahan kentut doank lho, ehhh malah buntut2nya jadi maag trus kembung trus malah kram perut kayak ditusuk2! :|
Makanya sodara2, kalo hendak kentut janganlah ditahan2, bisa berakibat fatal ntar!
Workshop yang sempet gue ikutin: Anatomy and traditional drawing by Andrew Jones sama Michael Mentler. Bah, ini si bang Jonsie sibuk sendiri sama kerjaan dia, apanya yang ngajar bung?? Si Mentler very helpful sih, tapi gara2 suara dia kecil buanget dan orang2 yang ngerubutin dia banyakkkk alhasil gue juga tak tahu-menahu dia lagi ngajar apa. ^^;
Di hari kedua ini, yang cukup helpful malah waktu gue ngeliatin sketchbooknya si akang Wes dan cara dia gambar. Kacauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!
Tu orang bener2 my new inspiration deh!!!! Again, gara2 ngeliat gambar2 dia, gue kayak dibukain tentang cara shading dan toning yang bener pake pensil mekanik!
Dia nggak pake tools macem2 lhooo...Cuma modal pensil cetekan 2B sama sketchbooknya yang ukuran mini, tapi dia bisa produce such a BEAUTIFUL pencil drawing in short amount of time! TTATT *terima kasih oh Tuhan buat pencerahannya!!!!*
Satu hal yang gue belajar dari si akang Wes tercintah: dia nggak buru2 kalo narik garis. It seemed to me that he put a lot of thought in each stroke. Jadinya nggak asal ngurek2, ga asal sketching. Lining dia bersihhh banget, and gue jarang ngeliat dia ngehapus. Waktu dia ngesketch, dia juga ga ngesketch dengan napsunya, yang goresannya sampe berbekas di kertasnya gitu. Gerakan tangannya waktu ngegambar tuh sangat2 ringan, almost dancing di atas kertasnya. Flowy banget gitu deh.
Waktu dia ngeshade n ngetone juga sama aja, nggak asal ngeblok sana-sini yang penting keliatan ada shading. Dia bener2 took his time untuk develop hatching/cross hatchingnya, sampe akhirnya kerjaan dia keliatan 3D dan berkesan clean. Buat masalah ini, Jason Chan juga ada ngomong sama gue, untuk look for plane changes instead of blindly ngetone. Dan dia juga bilank, waktu gue put down my shading, goresannya diusahakan searah sama plane changesnya, biar kesannya 3D and nggak confusing.
Sejak dikasih tau gitu, gue mulai mempraktekan, dan hasilnya DASYAT BO!

Nah, this was the best day.
Kondisi badan gue oke, udah gitu dapet one on one coaching pula sama beberapa instructor!
Salah satu kelas yang menurut gue sangat bermanfaat, and thank God gue mengabaikan saran temen gue untuk ga ikutan kelas ini, kelas digital painting in photosop with Bobby Chiu. Walopun gue telat masuk sekitar 15 mins, and udah penuh bener sampe harus berdiri di pintu, tapi nonetheless, ini kelas bener2 inspirational n helpful!
Ini yang gue dapet dari kelasnya Bobby Chiu *nyadur dari notenya temen gue sih XD*:
- Pay close attention to position and the shape of highlight. When unsure, create a highlight on a new layer and move it around. The shape of the highlight reflects the shape of the surface at all times.
- Even when creating a fictional subject, it is important to draw inspiration from life. AKA: REFERENCE, BABY!!!
- Learn something every month and build up the library in your mind.
- You should always be trying to figure out your client’s vision rather than trying to push creative boundaries of your own. While on the job, you need to be enhancing the client’s vision rather than changing it.
Bobby’s quick digital demo:
• Make sure you can always see the thumbnail of your image. You can use navigator for this. Bobby opens a second window of the same file he is working on instead.
To do this, go to Window – Arrange – New Window for *whatever your file name is*
Put the new window next to the window you are working in, and resize it so that you can see the thumbnail of the entire image. When painting, make sure it looks good in the thumbnail window or your picture may not be working properly.
• Do not rush to put down strokes. One thought, one stroke. The speed of putting down marks has nothing to do with your work speed. What makes you work faster is if you train yourself to think faster.
• Bobby likes to start in a dark background, sketch using a very slightly darker color. He believes that to preserve the imagination in one’s sketch, one must not kill it with too much contrast too early on. It’s very much like looking into the dark at night and seeing shapes. If it’s broad daylight with everything in plain sight, sometimes your imagination stops working.
• It is important to establish the lighting scheme early on. Work in layers, and if the contrast becomes too great too fast, turn down the opacity so you can easily paint over it on a new layer.
• Bobby starts out with the texture brush, then switch to the default round brush.
• Avoid using complete black. Try to think about colors a few steps ahead. On the other hand, highlights are also very rarely white.
• Bobby alternatively paints in the dark and the light, gradually increasing the contrast.
• Use contrast wisely. It’s a tool to attract the eye.

Cara beliau ngajar jelas beda sama Bobby Chiu yang lecturenya enak ngalir dan orang nggak bingung. Mr. Manchess suka ngobrol kesana-kemari and kita musti pinter2 nangkep point dari apa yang dia omongin. Eniwei, here's some tips yang gue dapet dari Mr. Manchess ttg how to do a drawing from imagination, doesn't matter what your medium is :)
Drawing from Imagination by Greg Manchess:
- Start with a vision, rough ideas. Jot down any ideas that you can come up with, then mulai dari thumbnails >> shape, jangan line/detail. As the drawing/painting progress, try to constantly thinking in shapes. Keep the idea as direct as possible
- Do research and planning of a painting, it's VERY important! If you plan ahead how your painting would be instead of just going with the flow, you will save more time and energy. You will also have a clear understanding on where you drawing would go.
- Set up tone and cahaya dari arah mana, supaya create lighting yang believable
- REFERENCES! always, and always have reference with you, especially if it's something with environment. Oh well, dont forget references. PERIOD.
- Give just enough taste of imagination. Maksudnya, jangan overdo, biar ntar jadinya tetep masuk akal. Give a taste of real life too in your drawing.
- Build up warna dari underpainting, then working towards shadow, and last baru ke light areas. Avoid going into detail first thing at all cost.
- Do your coloring by blocking the color, tapi jangan ngasal, harus ada formnya. Perhatiin tarikan brush, mo ke arah mana harus sesuai sama form/shape yang mau dibentuk (plane changes ala jason chan).
- Composition trick: Overlapping elements selalu menarik and give depth. Do not put the drawings/characters/elements at the same distant. It screams BORING!!
- Always, and always start with something simple first, then you can elaborate later on.
And here's another note I got from one on one talking with William Whitaker, a master painter :) Mostly sih tipsnya dia buat oil painting, tapi sapa tau aja bisa diapply ke digital juga XD
- When you have a difficulty on setting up a flesh color, go with a cooler tone instead of warm. You can never overdo your cool colors, but you can always overkill your warm colors. Cool colors also give you more freedom to build up to warm. Once it's too warm, you can never muted it down without making it looking muddy.
- Pick a brush that's the biggest brush we think we can use, then use the bigger one to paint
- Harus ada balance antara complexity/rendering area sama unrendered area. People tend to over-render everything so they leave no room for eyes to breath
- Dont worry about color combination and such. First, you need to master your brush handling and how you put down your color.

- Use lighter pencil, karena dia ngeliat tendency gue ngebikin gambar jadi gelap and jadi messy gara2 graphitenya cemong2, dan juga tendency gue buat press super hard sampe akhirnya berbekas. Not pretty...
- Think about plane changes instead of lines. Perhatiin arsiran, harus searah/mendukung plane changes *ampe bosen gue dengernya*
- If work from life, draw what you see, not what you think you see.
Ihh, this one is a tricky one, soalnya rata2 orang punya tendency buat ngegambar apa yang ada di otaknya, bukan yang diliat mata. I literally have to stop and stare at the model when I draw from life, dan gue juga harus terus2an make sure tangan gue nggak going berserk sendiri, tapi bisa gambar pelan2.
- For pencil drawing, work from light to dark. You can always darken the light area, but once it's too dark, it's hard to pull the light area like before.

Kunjungan ke Dallas: Excitement dan Kebodohan2
Akhirnyaaaa, akhirnya akhirnyaaaa jadi juga gue ke Dallas buat ngikutin conference/workshop Reverie yang diadain sama conceptart.org and Massive Black! Padahal beberapa minggu sebelomnya entah kenapa excitementnya berkurang, sampe2 gue bilank ke Dita, "kok gue nggak sedeg2an waktu pertama gue pengen pergi ya?" And bahkan semalem sebelom berangkat, gue udah mikir pengen cancel aja HAHAHAH! Tapi yah, sakinggg itu $595 dan laen2nya udah dibayar, jadi mo ga mo ya gue musti pergilah. Bisa ditabok bonyok, temen2 dan Tuhan kalo udah beres semua tapi ga jadi brangkat gara2 alesan yang geje *"Karena hati gue udah terpaut di SF!!" CUIH!!! Loe kira sinetronn???*
Dengan packing ala kadarnya karena packingnya last minute, dan hampir tak bisa ke erpot gara2 gue salah ngecek schedule BART (gue pikir BART bakalan jalan dari jem 5 pagi, ternyata gue lupa kalo gue brangkat hari SABTU which BART baru jalan jem 7 pagi, dan flight gue jem 7 pagi!!!), akhirnya gue melangkahkan kaki juga ke SFO dan langsung masuk pesawat menuju Vegas, yang akhirnya membawa gue sampe selamat ke tempat tujuan di Dallas. Begitu nyampe Dallas, kesan pertama gue: GILEEE ni kota guede benerrrrrr!!! Dan sepiiiiii bangettt!!! ^^; Apalagi pas gue nyampe di hotel yang katanya ada di donton, makin bengonglah gue. Serius bo! Beda bener sama SF yang downtownnya cramped, crowded dan brisik dengan orang dan kendaraan lalu-lalang. Gue tiba di donton Dallas yang anteng, tenang, ga banyak orang dan..jalanan super gede di kanan-kiri. Sampe di hotel, gue langsung tidur blek sek (saking kurang tidur malemnya gara2 ribet nyari taksi buat ke erpot), dan missed acara ngumpul2 bareng anak2 yang laen di City Tavern. Tapi gapapa, gara2 stayed di hotel, gue malah jadi ketemu sama my roommate, Sophie, dan kenalan sama Sam alias Helioth :D
Begitu nyampe di Fashion Industry Gallery (venuenya), gue kenalan sama banyak orang, dan begitu pintu dibuka buat checking in, wahhhh langsung orang2 pada nyerbu!!!
The venue was fantastic!!! KERENNNN BANGET! XD
trus ada 1 projector screen guede banget di deket stage, dengan simbolnya Massive Black, then 10 other projector screens di sisi2 ruangannya, lengkap dengan set up laptop dan wacom tablet.
Acara dibuka sama pidato singkat dari Jason Manley selaku ketua dari event ini, dan orang2 langsung "menggila"!! And since opening eventnya ini digabung sama International Film Festival di Dallas, jadinya banyak orang2 dari dunia perfilman dateng and looked around. Ada DJ dan dance floor juga buat yang pada mo berjoget sampe pingsan. Ngomong2 joget, ada 1 orang saking semangatnya, dia sampe twisted his ankle and the next day musti dateng pake kursi roda! WAKAKAKAKAKAKA XD
For the opening event, ada special perfomance dari Andrew Jones, and gosh, he is very decent looking mannnn!!!!! GANTENG SIAHHHHHH!!!!
Oh, speaking of Andrew Jones, gue ada pengalaman agak malu2in nih, gara2 si Cecely. Waktu baru masuk ke venuenya, tau2 si Cec memperkenalkan diri sama 1 cowok cukup rupawan. Trus gue bingung donk, ni orang ngapain ngenal2in diri ke orang tak dikenal? Kira2 begini percakapan gue sama Cec and Andrew Jones:
gue: Who is that?
Cec: That's Andrew Jones!!!
gue: ............ *mulut nganga gede* That..That's Andrew Jones???
Cec: Yeap girl, that's him!
gue: PICTUREEEEEE!!!! *fangirl mode on*
Cec: Say hi to him then.
gue: No, dont want. I'm nervous!!
terusss si Cec langsung narik gue ke arahnya Andrew Jones, dan dengan santainya bilank begini ke Andrew:

dannnnn mengingat betapa fangirl mode onnya gue waktu itu, the 1st sentence yang keluar dari mulut gue adalah: "CAN I TAKE A PICTURE WITH YOU, PLEASE??"

Andrew dengan ramahnya bilank "Sure!" dan berpose dengan gue berdua pake kameranya si Cec. Oh well, at least I got a pic sama dia, tapi tetep aja, malu2in bangettttt!!!!
Kejadian memalukan terulank kembali waktu gue berusaha buat minta tandatangannya Marko Djurdjevic. Okeh, sebelomnya, FYI, gue bukan fansnya dia. Gue did this merely buat temen gue yang demen banget sama si Marko. So I was just doing a favor for him. Eniwei, setelah 2 hari stalking si Marko, and melihat2 kesempatan kapan dia sendirian (halo?? gue nggak mungkin donk minta ttd dia waktu lagi banyak orang, bisa2 disangka fantard darimana kale!), akhirnya kesempatan itu tiba di hari ketiga, waktu gue lagi seru2nya ngedengerin penjelasan dari William Whitaker. Begitu ngeliat si Marko mondar-mandir tanpa seorangpun sama dia, langsung deh gue melesat ke TKP sambil bawa pen and sketchbook.
Begini kira2 kejadiannya:
gue: Hi Marko! *pake suara tinggi*
Marko: Hey! *senyum lebar n noleh. oh boy, ni orang sangat intimidating ^^; pertama, karena dia tinggi besar secara fisik, kedua, karena modelnya kayak rockstar, ketiga, karena dia adalah Marko Djurdjevic! walopun gue nggak ngefans juga, tetep aja nerves kalo berhadapan langsung sama illustrator/concept artist yang canggih kayak dia.*
gue: ... *langsung ngeblank seketika dan menatap dia dengan tatapan kosong for a split second*
Dan sodara2, apa yang terjadi selanjutnya???
Dengan bodohnya dan agak2 gugup gue langsung bilank, "Can I get your signature, please?"

Dia langsung ngambil sketbuk gue dan mengurek2nya dengan ttd dia. Sebenernya sih kalo gue boleh minta, gue minta dia ttd 1 halaman penuh, plus sketsa, tapi bisa2 gue dilempar dari tempat workshop kalo brani minta itu XD
Setelah dia kelar menandatangani sketbuk gue, dengan gugup dan bodohnya gue berkata, "I really like your stuff!"

Gue mendegrade myself kayak fantard2 yang kalo ketemu idolanya sampe gagap2 ga bisa ngomong >___<"
Untung kebodohan gue nggak berlanjut ke laen2nya, ketika gue musti minta autographnya Bobby Chiu and Kei Acedera buat si Mogri yang udah ngerengek2 dari jaman maling diseruduk kuda. Surprisingly, Bobby Chiu sama Kei Acedera bener2 approachable :)
Walopun terkenal, mereka sangat ramah and humble. Well, bukannya yang laen sombong sih..Cuma mungkin ada beberapa orang yang emank punya hawa (dipikir siluman, berhawa??) kurang bisa diapproach.
Kayak si Wes Burt, mukanya kayak ditekuk gara2 nggak bisa boker seminggu gitu, yah mana orang berani ngedeketin atuh???? (tapi gue udah terlanjur jatuh citrong sama dia, despite dia punya tampang susah gara2 sembelit or nggak).
Oh 1 hal yang gue notice, waktu orang2 MB dan teman2nya berdiri di atas panggung (gue ampir nulis "mimbar" instead of panggung, kayak mau kotbah aja huahuahua), those artists looked alike!!!!
Udah modelnya sama, pake kaos sama, stylenya mirip2, bah!
Yah yang beda banyak juga sihh.. Kayak si Marko karena rambut dia berjambul mirip ayam jantan abis berantem, Wes Burt yang tampang dan gayanya anak band abis, Jason Chan yang jelas2 Asia, Jenova Chen yang another Asian, Michael Mentler yang mirip santa claus, Jason Manley yang berkacamata dan kecil mungil, Andrew Jones si ganteng yang selalu pake topi, sarung tangan n sekilas mirip David Beckham, William Whitaker si kakek ramah yang mengingatkan gue sama opa2, Aleksi Briclot the dreaded hair guy, Bobby Chiu yang jelas2 juga orang Asia, dan Kei Acedera yang mirip cewek Bali. Sisanya? meneketeheeeee! Gue aja sampe kaget waktu ngeliat cowok tinggi yang berpotongan cepak dan berjenggot itu El Coro! Gue pikir teh sapaaa gitu. Soalnya gue pikir si Coro = cowok hippie setengah baya berjenggot yang kayak nggak mandi 1 bulan. Ternyata bahhhhh, kok masih muda??? O_____o
Mana yang punya potongan mirip2 dia banyak pisan!
